Cross-Training Series: CrossFit

CrossFitters are some of the strongest people out there, but like many things in life, too much CrossFit can be detrimental to your physical health. Studies show that the injury rate in CrossFit is approximately 20%. This often results from the high-impact nature of the workout, overtraining and improper form.

Working out at HSM | Core is the perfect complement to a CrossFit regimen. Your core-centric mix of strength and flexibility on the megaformer prepares your body for your next CrossFit WOD. We recommend to our CrossFit clients to incorporate one to two weekly HSM | Core sessions into their CrossFit routine to keep their gains happening safely and their bodies injury-free. Here’s how:

High-impact exercises can cause joint health issues, negate them with HSM | Core: With an extreme, high-impact conditioning program like CrossFit, you put your joints at risk of injury. The key is balancing out high-impact exercises with a low-impact workout. The beauty of HSM | Core is that every exercise on the megaformer is low-impact, but still high-intensity — ensuring you won’t lose the gains you’ve CrossFitted so hard for!

What is overtraining and how can it lead to rhabdomyolysis?: Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents into the blood. These substances are harmful to the kidneys and often cause kidney damage. An HSM | Core workout gives your muscles the time they need to repair between CrossFit sessions. The exercises done on the megaformer can work up to 600 muscles at a time, but also stretch them out, aiding in their recovery. After class, your metabolism can stay active for up to 24 hours, also helping those muscles repair themselves.

Improper form can lead to injury: With a max of just 10-12 people per class at HSM | Core, the 40-minute workouts feel more like a personal training session. Our coaches are trained to set you up in safe, healthy alignment and make sure you stay there, making proper form a main focus and keeping you healthy and pain-free.

While CrossFit can make you strong, it can also be extremely tolling on the body. To keep your body running like a fine-tuned machine, and strengthen and tone your muscles in a totally new way, sign up for a class at HSM | Core!
